The Sarah Kemble Scholarship was established in 2018 to honor the memory of Dr. Sarah Kemble, founder of the Community Health Center of Franklin County. Dr. Kemble, recognizing that access to quality health care was a significant need in the county, was the driving force behind the creation of the health center. The Community Health Center of Franklin County began providing services as a Federally Qualified Community Health Center in 1997 and continues to provide primary, dental, and behavioral health care in Orange and Greenfield. In addition to seeing patients as a beloved physician, Sarah also held positions as Executive Director and Medical Director.

$1,000 scholarships are awarded to three graduating seniors from a high school in Franklin county (Greenfield High School, Mohawk, Pioneer, Turners Falls, Franklin Tech, Mahar, Athol) who are pursuing a career in healthcare or a field which promotes public and community health. In recognition of Sarah’s commitment to quality veterans’ healthcare, veterans currently residing in Franklin County are also encouraged to apply.

Dr. Kemble, a tireless healthcare activist, convened a group of like-minded advocates committed to social justice and health care as a right. These individuals worked long and hard and persevered until the health center finally opened its doors in 1997. This is the history of a rural health center, the Community Health Center of Franklin County.

Dr. Kemble lived and worked to create a better world where access to quality and affordable health care is available to everyone regardless of ability to pay. It is in this spirit the scholarships will honor and preserve her legacy as a dedicated visionary.
